Third Posting for Evaluation.

What are the similarities and differences between few seach engines?

I will talk about 4 seach engines, which are mamma.com, google scholar, ericdigests.org and yahoo.com. These four seach engines are commonly used nowadays. Firstly, let me introduce all the four search engines.

1) Mamma.com- a site owned and operated by Copernic Inc. (formerly known as Mamma.com Inc.)

2) Google Scholar- A freely-accesible Web search engine that indexes the full text of scholarly literature across an array of publishing formats and disciplines.

3) Eric Digests- short reports on topics of prime current interest in education.

4) yahoo.com- An American public corporation headquatered in Sunnyvale, California that provides internet services worldwide.

Mamma.com is a "smart" metasearch engine - every time you type in a query Mamma cocurrently searches a variety of engines, directories, and deep content sites, properly formats the words and syntax for each, compiles their results in a virtual database, eliminates duplicates, and displays them in a uniform manner according to relevance. It's like using multiple search engines simultaneously.

Released in beta in November 2004, the Google Scholar index includes most peer-reviewed online journals of the world's largest scientific publishers. It is similar in function to the freely available Scirus from Elsevier, CiteSeer, and getCITED. It is also similar to the subscription-based tools, Elsevier's Scopus and Thomson ISI's Web of Science. Google Scholar nonetheless claims to cover more websites, journal sources and languages.

Eric Digests targeted specifically for teachers, administrators, policymakers, and other practitioners, but generally useful to the broad educational community. It is designed to provide an overview of information on a given topic and references to items providing more detailed information. There are a large variety of topics covered including teaching, learning, libraries, charter schools, special education, higher education, home schooling, and many more.

Yahoo! provides a wide array of internet services that cater to most online activities. It operates the web portal http://www.yahoo.com/ which provides content including the latest news, Yahoo! Finance gives users quick access to other Yahoo! services like Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Maps, Yahoo! Groups and Yahoo! Messenger. The majority of the product offerings are available globally in more than 20 languages.

Among all these search engines, i would mostly prefer Yahoo! and Google Scholar. It is because this two search engines are widely used among students as well as workers in Malaysia. I prefer Yahoo! the most as in my opinion, it is the ultimate search engines where i can find all sorts of informations that i want. Apart from that, i can browse images that i want and find places through Yahoo!Maps which i find that is precise and accurate.
